Financial Literacy Campaign

Project Manager: Fadhil Afandi bin Mohd Azahar.

On 3 – 4 March 2008, we had organized the Financial Literacy Campaign as an additional project to ensure a fiscally educated society at large. With recession looming in the near future, there was no better time for us to guide people so that they could withstand the depression. And for that, our financial literacy campaign was to introduce unit trust as the preferred type of investment especially for students.

The booth

Our main target audience for the campaign were university students – mainly Uniten’s students – aged 18 till 25 respectively. This had been done with concern that young adults nowadays have the tendency to spend on what that is unnecessary for them. We would like to plant a thought in each of them that, rather than spend hundreds or even thousands of ringgit on clothes and gadgets that they don’t even need, it is better to invest that extra ringgit for something that is more worthy so that they can have a better start when they a starting off their career or a family.

The campaign included a 2-days event of exhibition and talk by the Public Mutual Berhad. This event gave the audience more information or knowledge on the benefits of investing in unit trust, with a hope that it would somehow help individuals in making the right move with their money.

Project: Charity is Unity I & II (2007-2008)

Project Manager: Nur Atiqah binti Zainuddin and Mohd Taufiq (former)

For the past seven years, SIFE UNITEN have successfully organized programs with the Rumah Amal Cahaya Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (RACTAR). These programs were meant to teach the children more about the entrepreneurships that we believe will later benefit them in their life. Based on the success of the previous activities, we have decided to continue with the program by conducting ‘Charity is Unity I & II’, that include awareness about the state of the environment, entrepreneurship skills, and self-promotion.

We realized that majority of the orphans have a very low self confidence in themselves and most of them cannot perform in their education in school. Thus, we decided to organize programs that could help the children builds some confidence in them. The module created would help them know how to work in a team, enhance their managing skills, teach them on how to organize programs and most importantly help them to understand about entrepreneurship which is very important for them as these are the skills they will acquire in the future to support themselves.

OBJECTIVES OF PROGRAM
  • To expose to the orphans about entrepreneurial skills and business management according to their level of understanding.
  • To help the orphanage to promote their products and services.
  • To guide the orphans on how to organize events, since some of the participants will be entering high level education institution.
  • To increase the awareness of the public about those who needs the attention in welfare homes and orphanage.
  • To expose the public about Program Sihat Untuk Remaja (PROSTAR).
  • To expose the public about environment and public health awareness.
DESCRIPTION

In these one-day events (for both years) that were conducted in the Astaka, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, the orphans had an ice-breaking session before they were divided into groups for the activities. The activities were conducted around the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa and were based on theirs entrepreneurial skills and knowledge on environment which had been taught by us during monthly visits at their homes.

This event was also meant to promote their tailor service which they have been doing it for the past five years. We also introduced a special blog which was created by the SIFE students during the launching ceremony and to be updated by themselves. The main objective of creating the blog is to form a free advertising platform for RACTAR to help widen their markets and improving their marketing strategy.

As for the environment awareness, we distributed car’s stickers to public which promoting ‘Say No to Plastic Bags’. Apart from that, the Program Sihat Untuk Remaja (PROSTAR) booth will help boost public health awareness by offering public to take part in blood test, BMI test and others. This event also in hope to educate the public about their responsibilities to the children and to expose the public with charity works. Public that came had better understanding in the orphans and their orphanage, as well as the PROSTAR program.

Project: Eco-AF Fish Feeder (2008)

SIFE Uniten undertook the task to promote the product, that is the Automatic Rotating Feeding Mechanism, Eco-AF.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
  • To introduce ECO-AF in fish culture.
  • To increase the income of fish breeders using ECO-AF
  • To preserve the environment by using renewable resources
  • To market the ECO-AF to the local and global market
THE PRODUCT

This contraption is designed for dry feed; it creates a cheaper and innovative way to successfully operate fish farms. This project is suitable for application which requires the interval release of matter like fish feed in the aqua set-up. It creates a great advantage to remote areas that do not have steady electricity supply since the timer is purely established through mechanical devices using the readily flow of water.

This product is an innovation of our SIFE member Khairul Faizi Mohamed with financial assistance from College of Engineering and guidance of the Mechanical Department of Uniten headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris.

IMPLEMENTATION

Social development
ECO-AF is very easy to operate with a very simple setup, and the cost is also reasonable. It also increases cost-efficiency because it requires minimal monitoring and maintainance. Small, medium, and large scale fish farmers in Malaysia are able to benefit from this.

Economic Development
As a marketing strategy, we have participated in numerous competitions thet have helped promote and attract potential buyers. After getting it patented, we hope to market the product for local and overseas markets.

Environment Development
The ECO-AF is in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol*, as it does not require electricity to function – the timer is purely established through mechanical components using the readily available flow of water instead.

SIFE CRITERIA HIT:
  • market economics
  • success skills
  • sustainability
  • evironmental sustainability

*The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrial countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These amount to an average of five percents against 1990 levels over five-year period 2008-2012.
