Project: Eco-AF Fish Feeder (2008)

SIFE Uniten undertook the task to promote the product, that is the Automatic Rotating Feeding Mechanism, Eco-AF.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
  • To introduce ECO-AF in fish culture.
  • To increase the income of fish breeders using ECO-AF
  • To preserve the environment by using renewable resources
  • To market the ECO-AF to the local and global market
THE PRODUCT

This contraption is designed for dry feed; it creates a cheaper and innovative way to successfully operate fish farms. This project is suitable for application which requires the interval release of matter like fish feed in the aqua set-up. It creates a great advantage to remote areas that do not have steady electricity supply since the timer is purely established through mechanical devices using the readily flow of water.

This product is an innovation of our SIFE member Khairul Faizi Mohamed with financial assistance from College of Engineering and guidance of the Mechanical Department of Uniten headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris.

IMPLEMENTATION

Social development
ECO-AF is very easy to operate with a very simple setup, and the cost is also reasonable. It also increases cost-efficiency because it requires minimal monitoring and maintainance. Small, medium, and large scale fish farmers in Malaysia are able to benefit from this.

Economic Development
As a marketing strategy, we have participated in numerous competitions thet have helped promote and attract potential buyers. After getting it patented, we hope to market the product for local and overseas markets.

Environment Development
The ECO-AF is in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol*, as it does not require electricity to function – the timer is purely established through mechanical components using the readily available flow of water instead.

SIFE CRITERIA HIT:
  • market economics
  • success skills
  • sustainability
  • evironmental sustainability

*The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrial countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These amount to an average of five percents against 1990 levels over five-year period 2008-2012.
